Well, WHOIS is more of a WHAT than a WHO
. The WHOIS is an internet function that allows you to query the WHOIS online database for details on a domain registration. This database, the WHOIS database, contains information on the registrant of a domain. Once you register a domain (and you don’t specify that your details should be hidden), then certain information such as your name, address, email, etc. would reflect on the WHOIS database along with the domain you registered. You can see this as a seal of authentication.
The WHOIS database helps anyone to determine if a domain is available, and if not, who it is registered to. It also provides certain important information such as the date of registration of the domain, its expiry date, when it was last modified, the status of the domain, the nameservers of the domain and even more.
This means that you may use a WHOIS search query to determine if a domain is available, who registered it and when it expires. So if you have a domain registered somewhere, you must know how to query the WHOIS database. Why? Let’s just say you don’t want to find out.
How to query the WHOIS database
There are various websites that provide you with necessary tools to determine if a domain is available and to directly query the WHOIS server. My personal choice is WhoGoHost. Unlike most WHOIS query sites, WhoGoHost also allows you to perform a WHOIS query on .ng domain names. Simply enter the domain you would like to find out about on the homepage and do a search. If the domain has been registered, click on the WHOIS link to check out the details of the domain. If it hasn’t been registered, then you can get it for yourself
So whenever you register a domain, you can always verify the status by simply performing a WHOIS search. Remember to take note of the expiry date of the domain because I’m sure you don’t want that precious domain to be back in the open market.
You can do your nigerian .ng domain registration your domains here.
